Disney made the announcement earlier today that the 5 year long Disney California Adventure expansion and makeover will be complete this June. Starting back with the announcement in 2007 that Disney would dump more than 1 billion dollars into the struggling theme park in a effort to create more family friendly and immersive environments, the final sections will be complete and open to the public this June 15th.
Over the past 5 years Disney California Adventure has seen many changes. The Paradise Pier area has seen the majority with the construction of a 3D interactive attraction, Toy Story Midway Mania, the complete redesign of what is now known at Mickey’s Fun Wheel, the Silly Symphony Swings and Goofy’s Sky School, the removal of an attraction, the complete construction and opening of the Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, the Boardwalk Restaurants and the addition of the amazing night time spectacular, the World of Color. Cosmetic changes around the park have also taken place at Grizzly River Run and in what will soon be called Hollywood Land. But we haven’t seen anything yet!
Buena Vista Street, the new entry corridor to Disney California Adventure will be like stepping back in time to 1920′s Los Angeles. The area will feature time period shops and eateries, a reproduction of the Carthay Circle Theatre which will feature a restaurant and lounge, and a trolly street car system that features replicas of the Pacific Electric Red Cars.
Cars Land will be an entirely new land added to the backside of Disney California Adventure. The 12 acre land will be like stepping into Radiator Springs from the Disney/ Pixar movie Cars. Three new attractions will be part of the land, Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, Luigi’s Flying Tires and the mega E-Ticket, Radiator Springs Racers!
This week, Disney President and CEO Bob Iger joined Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, for a tour of Buena Vista Street and Cars Land. They took rides on the Red Car Trolley, Luigi’s Flying Tires (which is very similar to Disneyland’s Flying Saucers attraction from 1961) and Radiator Springs Racers.
In a press release, Disney has confirmed that the opening date for both lands will be on June 15th (no word yet on Cast Member or Annual Passholder previews) and that Disney California Adventure park will be closed on June 14th for a media event.
I don’t know about you, but I am very excited now that Disney has set the official date and announced it! Along with this announcement, Disney also released a publicity video showcasing the relaunch of Disney California Adventure park, as well as what we can expect when Buena Vista Street and Cars Land opens this June 15th. The video gives us current views into the construction areas, and shows some behind the scenes aspects of the attractions.
Will you go to the Disneyland Resort on June 15th to experience the new Disney California Adventure park?
